On March 5, 1974 -- the same day that rival motorcycle clubs roared through suburban Miami in celebration of their annual "Bike Week" -- seventeen-year-old Amy Billig left home to meet a friend for lunch ... and vanished. Several days later, Amy's frantic mother, Susan Billig, received an anonymous phone call saying that her daughter had been carried off by one of the biker gangs. And so began Susan's harrowing and extraordinary twenty-five-year search for her lost child -- an odyssey that led a desperate parent into the seedy heart of a dangerous subculture built on drugs, rebellion, brutality, and sex; a relentless hunt for the truth that showed her the best side of humanity...and the very worst.

Without a Trace The Disappearance of Amy Billig A Mother Search for Justice eBook Greg Aunapu Susan Billig

amy vanished off the street in florida, and this book is mostly about what happened with her family's efforts to find her and what happened.

her mother spent years dealing with people who claimed that they knew what happened or had partial information. i think the most likely is that someone lured her into a car and killed her, then left her body where it was never found. the biggest clue was her camera that was found off a freeway nearby. this case occurred in the 70's, and amy was a hippie-type with a belief that the world and people were all good. she would not have been suspicious, and hitchhiking was popular. it was easy for rapists/killers to offer rides and lure victims.

however, because a large number of hell's angels and other outlaw biker gang members were in the area at that time, one theory developed that amy had been kidnapped as these scum bags were known to kidnap and enslave women for sex slaves. that such slavery could happen all over the country in the u.s. in the 1970's and that these gangs spoke of it casually makes you want to strangle them all.

however, amy's mother remained very calm and pursued this angle for years in spite of conflicting information from a variety of very questionable characters. no one has ever determined for a fact what happened to amy.

Without a Trace The Disappearance of Amy Billig A Mother Search for Justice eBook Greg Aunapu Susan Billig Reviews

When a teen disappears today a search is underway right away...this was not the case in 1974. Then, a missing teen was considered a runaway, and by the time investigative work began, it was often too late. The disappearance of Amy Billig is one of those cold cases, and her mother's never ending search heartbreaking. As I read this book, I thought of Natalie Holloway. The girls were both the same age, the investigations were equally frustrating, the bodies were never found, and both mothers amazingly strong women.
If a five star rating were based on a book being one you can't put down this one deserves to be a ten!! This is an incredible story of a young girl's disappearance and a mother's love. I was only a couple of years older than Amy at the time of her disappearance and I remember hearing about it at the time. I had never heard the rest of the story. It is just unimaginable what these parents went through and all the situations her mother Sue put herself in in an attempt to find her daughter. This book describes not just the love and support the family of a kidnapping victim receives but also how cruel some horrible people can be in situations such as this. Sadly the events in this book are repeated thousands and thousands of times in the lives of other families.
As sad as this book is, the author did a fantastic job telling the story. It was a real page turner that I just couldn't put down. The ONLY thing I wish there had been was an epilogue telling what ever happened to Sue Billig. Is she still alive or has she joined her beloved husband and daughter in death. Where is Josh today? The end just kind of left the reader hanging.
A great great book, a must read for any true crime reader!!
This book is gut wrenching, disturbing and sad. If you want to learn how ineffective you law enforcement is in finding missing kids, read this book. Amy is one of thousands of missing children who have fallen through the cracks. We must do better for these individuals and their families.
Sadly, there are myriad stories of lost children. This is but another. However, the lengths to which the author went in search of the truth and what is, in contemporary parlance, closure is astounding. The books reads like a true crime novel only in this instance the story is true.
The story was interesting and sad. Nothing was really known about what happened to a young girl who disappeared and her mother who never gave up trying to find her for over 20 years. The question that kept coming to my mind was where were the police during all this? I was really rather put off by the fact that Mom continued to take threatening phone calls from a stalker. I mean at what point was reality going to surface with the mother? I had many questions that weren't answered. Having lost a daughter at the age of 18, I fully realize the lengths a mother will go through so as not to have to face the truth before it's absolutely necessary. However, eventually the truth must be faced no matter how painful.
In as much as this is a very sad story, and Sue and Ned gave up over 20 some years of their lives , they did not find out what really happened to their daughter, Amy. The story seemed to me too be all about Sue following many many stories from motorcycle gangs, which were all lies. The motorcycle gangs were murderers, drugies, you name it they did it, and yet Amy took her trust in them to help her, and yet they never showed her one photo that could of proved that Amy really was the one they were talking about. So sad that Sue really could not let some of that go, even today no one really knows what happened to her, was it really the motorcycle gang or someone else? Sue could of healed if is could accept the fact that Amy was never coming back, parents all love there children, but there has to be a point were more would just give up, and accept the fact that the child will never be back. So sad, that Sue could not do that, her son Josh, never really had parents to love him, as they should have. Terrible way to live.
This was a tough read because all throughout reading it, you know you're reading REAL. It was heartbreaking and emotional to get through but I'm very glad I managed to not only find this now out of print book, but that I got to finally read it and see all the facts of Amy's story. Having recently read thr 'fictional' book Nine Minutes, I was shocked to have discovered while reading this one about Amy's story all the similarities between her story and that fictional book I read. If you have never heard of Amy Billig, if you have read Nine Minutes, then you really should read this book and find out her sad but true story. Highly recommended reading.
